The very first library in Boerne opened its doors to the public 70 years ago, in 1952.
Our library has come a long way since that humble debut seven decades ago, providing not only free access to books and other resources, but also stat-eof-the-art technology and incomparable programs to educate, inspire, and entertain.
This year, the Patrick Heath Public Library celebrates our auspicious anniversary with yearlong special events for all ages.
Back in the 1950s, there were no computers, video games or even many television programs for children. Boys and girls instead found pleasurable entertainment through reading books and comics and playing indoor games such as checkers and cards. Outdoor play figured especially in youngster’s lives.
This month, our library encourages boys and girls to step back in time and sample some of the most popular outdoor and active fun of 70 years ago.
Get fit with Batman

More outdoor fun
Back by popular demand, we are delighted to once again invite toddlers ages 2 years and up to join us at the Main Plaza Gazebo for our annual tike trike race at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27. We will feature a fun story, rhymes and tasty treat. Bring your trikes and scooters for this fun event!
Nifty Fifties Book Spotlight
After a full afternoon of outdoor play, boys and girls delighted in curling up with a good book. This month we spotlight the very delightful “Half Magic” by Edward Eager.
Published in 1954, this book tells the hilarious adventures of a group of siblings who discover a coin that grants only half a wish.
What exactly do you do with only half a talking cat? Read this book to find out!
