Hickory Dickory Dock!
You probably know the next line of that Mother Goose rhyme is, “The mouse ran up the clock.”
Most boys and girls have heard Mother Goose rhymes since they were very little.
But Mother Goose rhymes were not always meant for children. Hundreds of years ago, Mother Goose rhymes were written by adults so that other grown-ups could read their beliefs about politics and the world. People thought that by setting their thoughts to rhyming tunes would make them easier to remember.
After many years, people forgot about the messages, and the rhymes were used just to entertain children.
April is National Poetry Month, a perfect time to celebrate rhymes and all the many other forms that poems can take. Read poems, write poems and share them with family and friends.
