Chargers edge Unicorns,
5-2
Boerne Champion never trailed in Tuesday’s baseball game at New Braunfels in a matchup of potential playoff teams.
The Chargers tallied 2 runs in its first at bat and went on to score single runs in three straight innings and defeated the Unicorns, 5-2.
Champion is 18-6 overall and 7-3 in district. The Chargers were looking for the sweep against the New Braunfels Friday night at home. They’ll play two with Wagner this coming week.
Owen Kuhl singled to start Tuesday’s game and moved to second on a Cal Isley sacrifice. Jaedyn Yamaguchi then doubled to score Kuhl, and it was 1-0.
Singles from Sawyer Smith and Andrew Harrison pushed in Yamaguchi from second and the Chargers were up 2-0 before the Unicorns had batted.
Isley doubled in the third and came home on a Garland Whitehead single for the 3-0 lead, and in the fourth frame, Champion used a hit batter, a Kuhl single and an error to bring in courtesy runner Ethan Jensen and the Chargers were up 4-0.
New Braunfels finally scratched for a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth and cut the lead in half. A catcher’s interference, a double and a ground out made it 4-1.
A walk and a wild pitch later in the inning allowed the Unicorns to score another run and it was 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, the Chargers picked up an insurance run after Aidan Smith walked and scored on a two-out double by Sam Miller and Champion was up 5-2.
New Braunfels didn’t score in its last three at bats, but they did load the bases in the bottom of the fifth. The Chargers hung tough and didn’t allow a run after starting pitcher AJ Grizzaffi recorded the final out in th frame with a strikeout.
The Unicorns only put on one more base runner the rest of the way and that came in the seventh with one out via a walk, but reliever Jackson Melanson fanned the last two batters to end it.
Champion outhit the Unicorns, 8-4, and knocked out doubles from Yamaguchi, Miller and Isley.
Grizzaffi picked up the win on 93 pitches after he gave up 4 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks and struck out 7.
Melanson went two innings on the hill and earned the save. He walked one and fanned 6, while not giving up a hit or a run.
