‘THE DINING DIVAS’

‘THE OFFICE’ GIRLS

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each month, the Boerne Star sends its “crack team” of restaurant reviewers to an establishment in the area. These ladies — who have assumed the names of Pam, Erin, Nellie and Kelly, from TV’s “The Office” — select a restaurant, show up unannounced, and take in all the establishment has to offer. This month: La Four’s Restaurant.

The Dining Divas took to the streets of Boerne again to sample some of La Four’s “hill country, hearty home cooking.”

La Four’s originally opened its doors in 19983 — originally from the Cajun state of Louisiana before establishing the first restaurant in Kerrville, Texas, before finally moving to Boerne to their current location on South Main Street.

Ready to try exceptional seafood, the La Fours’ ladies delivered a different dish to sample the coastal- themed restaurant. Nellie ordered the Grilled Shrimp Piquant. The dish stayed true to its name with a rich creole sauce and layers of bell peppers that provided a delightful tang. Shrimp seasoned perfectly with paprika further complemented the creole sauce, along with a side of tender, white rice.

As an extra side, Nellie tried the grilled zucchini, which came thinly sliced and with just the right amount of grill char.

Pam opted for a grilled shrimp dish too, this time accompanied by cheesy grits and grilled asparagus. The sauce was wonderfully smoky and creamy, while the grilled shrimp was nicely seasoned and tender.

The cheesy grits were rich, velvety and indulgent, while the asparagus added a crisp contrast to the tender shrimp and grits.

“It was a meal that satisfies the soul and taste buds,” Pam said.

Kelly, who hails from the Gulf Coast, ordered a coastal favorite: fried shrimp.

One thing Kelly loved was that she was able to substitute the other sides on the dish for a salad.

“I wanted a healthier alternative,” Kelly said.

The simple salad was fresh, crisp and delicious. But the fried shrimp stole the show with its perfect texture, taste and obvious freshness. The thick batter was crunchy and paired well with the rich and tangy tartar sauce.

Erin decided to go with a Cajun classic: Red beans and rice, which are a lunch special on Wednesdays. The sauce was deliciously spicy, but not overbearingly so.

Each slice of sausage was tender and could be cut into with a spoon. The dish was paired with two hushpuppies in a tasty, crunch batter.

But arguably, the star of the entire meal was the beignets for dessert.

Flaky, rolled in powder sugar and served with an amazing pecan caramel sauce, the beignets impressed all four divas. Not one beignet was left.

All in all, the divas recommend stopping by La Fours for lunch or dinner and trying their scrumptious seafood. They also suggest two orders of beignets — because one wasn’t enough!
