8-7 The Geneva School of Boerne baseball team suffered its first district loss after the Eagles were edged by Corpus Christi John Paul II Tuesday on the road.
The Centurions took Tuesday’s contest by a run, 8-7, in the Sparking City by the Sea, as Corpus Christi bills itself.
Geneva is 2-2 and was supposed to host Corpus Christi Incarnate Word Friday but that game was postponed.
Tuesday’s game turned in the third inning for John Paul II after the Centurions scored half of their runs in that one at bat.
Geneve was leading 3-2 going in the third frame thanks to a 2-run homer by Rooster Jons earlier in the game, but JPII pulled ahead by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the inning and went up, 6-3.
The Centurions tripled to start the inning and added 3 singles, 2 walks and a fielder’s- choice RBI to score 4 runs and never trailed from there.
Geneva cut into the lead in the top of the fourth with 2 runs to make it 6-5, but the Centurions answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning, and it was 7-5.
It stayed there until the seventh when the Eagles tied it at 7-7 with 2 runs, but the Centurions won it in the bottom of the inning.
John Paul II’s first batter in the frame reached on an error and his courtesy runner stole second. He later scored on a tag up to end it.
Geneva outhit the Centurions, 8-5, but their 8 hits only came from 3 players. Rooster Jons homered, singled and drove in 4 runs. Chase Doran knocked out 3 singles, scored a run and picked up 2 RBI, while Bryce Hanover also finished with 3 hits and scored twice.
TJ Cross walked and scored 2 runs and Harris Priesmeyer.
Hanover went 2.1 innings on the hill and gave up 3 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4 batters.
Doran tossed the final 4 innings and yielded 2 hits and struck out 4.
