The Geneva School of Boerne baseball team dug out of a 3-0 deficit and went on to defeat Holy Cross last Friday in Boerne, 7-4.
Geneva is 2-1 overall and played at Corpus Christi John Paul II on Tuesday and will host Corpus Christi Incarnate Word Friday, 5 p.m.
The Knights used two doubles, a hit batter and a single to score 3 runs in the third inning, but the lead didn’t last for long after the Eagles answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the third.
Geneva used four walks to score a run and it was 3-1. A steal of home plate by Chase Doran and a single from Jake Roberson tied it up at 3-3.
Colton Lutz later scored on a wild pitch and the Eagles held their first lead of the game, 4-3.
Geneva tacked on 2 more runs in the fourth and added another in the sixth for the 7-3 advantage. The run scored in the sixth came on another steal of home, this time from Gray Bruner.
In the seventh, Holy Cross used three walks, a fielder’s choice and a single to push in a run with two outs for their first run scored since the third frame.
But that’s where the rally ended after the Geneva pitcher Bryce Hanover struck out the next batter to end it.
Geneva was outhit 6-3 but took 11 walks and then used its speed on the bases to swipe 6 bags, including two steals of home.
Gray Bruner, Rooster Jons and Jake Roberson all singled, while Chase Doran and Bruner both scored twice. Brady Chandler, Jons and Colton Lutz all made it home plate once.
Roberson started on the hill and went 5.2 innings to get the win. He scattered 5 hits, gave up 3 earned runs, 1 walk and struck out 12.
Hanover closed it out and threw the final 1.1 innings. He yielded 1 hit, 1 run, 3 walks and fanned 1 batter.
