Geneva softball beats Holy Cross and Lutheran

The Geneva School of Boerne played two softball games last week and one was a blowout and the other went down to the wire and the Eagles won both.

Geneva defeated Holy Cross last Friday, 9-8, and before that, the Eagles beat Lutheran High School, 22-6.

Geneva (3-0) played at Corpus Christi John Paul II Tuesday and hosts Corpus Christi Incarnate Word Friday, 5 p.m.

Vs. Holy Cross

Geneva used a 7th-inning rally to defeat the Knights last Friday at home, 9-8.

The Eagles came up to bat in the bottom of the seventh and were trailing, 8-6, but scored 3 runs to win it, 9-8.

Geneva senior Lily Flora hit an RBI-double in the inning and sophomore Carlyle Harden recorded the game-winning hit with an RBI single to end it.

Both teams had a fast start and Holy Cross scored 3 in the first, but the Eagles answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning after Maegan Riebel smacked a grand slam for the 5-3 lead.

It stayed there until the fourth when the Knights retook the lead with 4 runs for the 7-5 advantage. Geneva pushed in a single run in the sixth thanks to a Riebel triple and it was 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh.

In the last inning, Holy Cross added a run to pull ahead 8-6, but the Eagles answered with a 3-run bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win, 9-8.

Riebel had a great game at the plate and hit a grand slam and a triple, collected 4 RBI and scored 2 runs.

Madeline Egbert was the winning pitcher and improved her record to 2-0.

Vs Lutheran School

The Geneva softball team kicked in the mercy rule after three innings and won by a score of 22-6.

Geneva knocked out 18 hits and scored all of its runs in two innings. The Eagles plated 13 runs in the first and 9 in the second and then didn’t bat in the bottom of the third frame.

After not scoring in the first, Lutheran tallied 4 runs in the second and 2 more in the third, but it wasn’t enough to keep the game from ending.

Sophomore Maya Thomson was the winning pitcher for Geneva and recorded her first win of the year.

Offensively, Reese Smith collected 3 RBI, Madeline Egbert doubled and triple and drove in 4 runs, Kate Friesenhahn went 3 for 3 at the plate and pushed in 3 runs, Elle Chalmers collected 3 RBI, Carlyle Harden went 3 for 3 and drove in 5 runs, while Maya Thomson hit 2 doubles and picked up 2 RBI.
