Boerne Champion didn’t waste any time taking control of Tuesday’s district baseball game with Alamo Heights.

The Chargers scored 5 runs in the first inning and added 3 more in the second for the quick 8-0 lead. Champion tacked on 2 runs in the fifth and sixth frames and ended up run-ruling the Mules, 12-2.

Champion closed out their series with the Mules Friday and is 12-4 overall entering the contest. They are 3-1 in 26-5A.

“It’s a big district win in a rivalry game and I’m proud of the way the kids came out and executed early,” said Chargers coach Ben Woodchick.

With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and three runners on, Jaedyn Yamaguchi cleared the bases with a double to make it 5-0.

“(Jaedyn) had a big hit, he really got us rolling,” Woodchick said. “He came up and had another RBI in his second at bat.”

A Yamaguchi single in the second made it 8-0 and it looked like the game might end quickly, but the Mules plated 2 runs in the top of the third and kept the Chargers off the board in the third and fourth frames after Alamo Heights changed pitchers.

“Their starter struggled a little and gave us some free bases and we took advantage of it,” Woodchick said. “Against their second pitcher we were overly aggressive for whatever reason in those middle innings, and they held us at bay and scored 2 runs. We kind of lost those middle innings and that’s something we need to focus on.”

The Chargers refocused and scored 2 runs in the fifth to make it 10-2 and then closed it out in the sixth with 2 more runs to kick in the mercy rule.

Sawyer Smith went 5 innings on the hill and picked up the win on 87 pitches. He gave up 7 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and struck out 6.

Pearce Kelly threw in the sixth and closed it out after he fanned 2 batters.

Champion tallied 10 hits and was paced by Yamaguchi who finished with 2 doubles and a single while driving in 5 runs.

Owen Kuhl tripled, was walked twice and scored once, Sawyer Smith singled, took 2 walks and scored twice and Garland Whitehead singled and scored.

Aidan Smith singled and walked, picked up 2 RBI and scored 2 runs, Cal Isley walked, singled, drove in a run and scored three times, while Austin Garritano singled, walked and scored a run.
