Boerne rallies past Rangers with big 5th inning

A five-run fifth inning helped the Boerne baseball team defeat Smithson Valley Tuesday on the road.

The Greyhounds defeated the Rangers, 11-6, and it came down to that fifth frame when they scored 5 of those runs to get the separation they needed.

BHS is 5-1 in district and 13-2 overall. They hosted the Rangers on Friday and then meet Boerne Champion next week for the first time.

Smithson Valley answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and used a double to bring in those 2 runs, but Boerne got out of the inning still holding the lead at 4-3.

It stayed there until the Greyhound put some distance between themselves and the Rangers in the fifth.

With one out, Jake Perez doubled to get things going. Grimes walked and Hill singled to bring in Perez and it was 5-3. Scarbrough singled and Grimes scored to make it 6-3.

With the bases loaded, Dylan Perez was hit by a pitch and Scarbrough’s courtesy runner, Colton Shaver, came home to bump it to 8-3.

Brooks Perez later scored on a passed ball and the Greyhounds were up 9-3.

A 3-run homer in the bottom of the sixth by the Rangers cut the lead down to 9-6, but the Greyhounds answered with 2 runs in the top of the seventh for some breathing room.

Ryan Hooper smacked a 2-RBI double to bring in Brooks Perez and Dylan Perez for the 11-6 lead after Brooks was hit by a pitch and Dylan walked.

In the bottom of the seventh, Smithson Valley put two runners on with one out, but the Boerne defense retired the next two batters to close it out.
