The Greyhound softball team almost pulled off a big win Tuesday to close out the first round of district play.
Boerne pushed New Braunfels but came up a few runs short to the Lady Unicorns, 6-4. BHS ends the first round of district at 3-5 and is 7-5 overall. The Lady Hounds were at Wagner Friday to kick off second-round action.
New Braunfels took the early lead at 2-0 in the first and added another run in the fourth for the 3-0 lead before Boerne could get on the board.
In the fifth, walks to Riley Partin and Breanna Krause put two runners on to start the inning. A sac bunt by Ryleigh Hastings and a sac fly by Maddie Vasquez brought in Partin to make it 3-1.
The Unicorns got the run back in the bottom of the frame with two outs with a three-base error and a passed ball and took a 4-1 lead.
Boerne tied it in the top of the sixth with its best offen-sive inning. A single, a fielder’s choice, a walk and an error allowed BHS to score two runs and make it a one-run game at 4-3.
Krause singles to bring in another run, and it was knotted up at 4-4.
However, it didn’t stay tied for long after the Unicorns answered with 2 runs in the bottom half of the frame. A single and a walk put two runners on base and then Kaiden Esparza doubled to bring in both base runners and put New Braunfels ahead 6-4.
BHS still had one last chance in the top of the seventh but went down in order with a couple of groundouts and a pop up to end it.
Boerne finished with 5 hits after Riley Partin doubled, picked up 2 RBI and scored once, Cerissa Nasis hit 2 singles, while Breanna Krause and Maddie Vasquez both singled and drove in a run.
Brooklynn Thomason and Lizzie Thornton both scored runs as well, while Thornton walked twice.
Jesseanna Aguirre tossed all 6 innings and threw 89 pitches. She gave up 7 hits, 5 runs, 6 walks and struck out 7.
