Wolverines pull away from Bobcats with big inninng

The Comfort baseball team closed out spring break by hosting the San Antonio Wolverines, a home school team.

It was a close game at 11-7 until the Wolverines scored 6 runs in the fifth frame on their way to a 17-7 victory over Comfort.

The Bobcats slip to 5-6 overall and visits Canyon Lake Wednesday before opening district play Monday, March 24, at Florence. Comfort will host Florence that Friday, March 28.

The Wolverines were up 3-2 at the end of the first inning and then added 2 more runs in the second for the 5-2 lead.

The Wolverines plated 3 more runs in the third frame and opened up an 8-2 advantage, but Comfort responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a 2-RBI double by Gunner Carpenter and it was 8-4 after three innings.

Both teams scored three runs in the fourth to make it 11-7 as it headed to the fifth frame.

The Wolverines blew it open in the fifth with 4 hits, including a 2-run home run, 2 hit batters and an error to score 6 runs and pull away from the Bobcats.

Comfort was the home team and still had a chance in the bottom of the fifth and needed to score a run to extend the game, but went down in order, which kicked in the mercy rule.

CHS finished with 6 hits that included 2 singles from both Mason Matt and Brooks Davis, along with a double and a single from Gunner Carpenter.

Matt, Davis and Carpenter are Comfort’s first three batters in the line up and accounted for all 6 of their hits.

Carpenter drove in 3 runs, while Matt and Davis plated 2 runs apiece. Tucker Rust walked and scored, Cade Woerner walked and scored, while Judd Lozano also plated a run.

Zach Jones went 4.1 innings on the hill and gave up 9 hits, 7 earned runs, 3 walks and struck out 3.

Lozano threw in the fifth inning and yielded 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 walks.
