Pieper swung the bat well and scored a lot of runs but every time the Warriors pushed in a run during Friday’s district softball game at Boerne High, the Lady Greyhounds always answered.

The result was a shootout after there was a combined 24 runs and 27 hits between the Warriors and Greyhounds, with Boerne High winning the contest, 14-10, thanks to their ability to answer Pieper.

Boerne is 3-4 in district and 7-4 overall. The Lady Greyhounds closed out the first round of district action Tuesday at New Braunfels. BHS starts the second round of 26-5A play Friday at Wagner.

The fireworks started right away in last Friday’s game after Pieper smacked a 2-run homer in the top of the first for the quick 2-0 lead.

Boerne tied it in the bottom half of the inning thanks in part to a triple from Brooklynn Thomason and it was knotted up at 2-2.

In the second, the Warriors pushed in 3 runs with two outs and pulled ahead at 5-2, but again, the Lady Greyhounds responded and in a big way.

BHS scored a run, and it was 5-3. From there, Ava Renteria slammed a 3-run homer to put Boerne ahead 6-5 and the Hounds weren’t done.

Four singles and a walk allowed Boerne to score 3 more runs and pull ahead at 9-5, but no lead was safe for long.

Pieper cut into the BHS advantage with 3 runs in the fourth frame and made it a 1-run game at 9-8, but the Greyhounds responded.

In the bottom half of the inning, Boerne used a two-out rally to extend its lead. Doubles from Leni Caldwell and Riley Partin, along with three singles helped to score 3 runs and the Lady Hounds were up 12-8 after four innings.

The Warriors plated a run in the fifth and it was 12-9, but Boerne answered with 2 runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning and it was 14-9.

Pieper wasn’t going down without a fight and in the sixth the Warriors hit a solo homer to make it 14-10, but they didn’t score again after that.

BHS didn’t answer in the bottom half of the inning and that marked the first time they didn’t respond with a run after Pieper scored, but they didn’t need any more runs with a 4-run lead that held until the end.

Ava Renteria homered, drove in 3 runs and scored 3 times, Cerissa Nasis took 2 walks and scored 2 runs, Brooklynn Thomason tripled and singled, picked up an RBI and scored 2 runs, Leni Caldwell doubled and singled, scored twice and drove in a run and Lizzy Thornton hit 2 singles, pushed in 3 runs and scored a run.

Riley Partin doubled and hit 2 singles, picked up an RBI and scored twice, Ryleigh Hastings singled, Kenley Thomason hit 2 singles, pushed in 2 runs and scored once and Tessa Murphy singled and scored.

Jesseanna Aguirre went all 7 innings in the circle and picked up the win on 94 pitches. She gave up 13 hits, 5 earned runs, 2 walks and struck out 2 batters.
