The Comfort softball team opened district play Friday by hosting Llano and put up a good fight, but the Lady Yellowjackets emerged with a one-run win.
Llano scored 6 of their 8 runs in one inning and went on to defeat the Comfort Deer, 8-7.
Comfort is 3-14 overall and 0-1 in district. The Deer continued their series with the Yellowjackets and were at Llano Monday. They’ll host Harper Friday.
Things looked good for Comfort early on after the Deer scored 4 runs in the second inning and added another in the third for the 5-0 lead which held until the fifth.
In the second, the Deer were patient at the plate and used 5 walks and a hit batter, coupled with a single from Kippy Sterling to take a 4-0 lead.
Sterling pushed in another run in the third frame, and it was 5-0, but Llano responded with 6 runs in the fifth. Two walks, two singles and three Comfort errors allowed Llano to pull ahead at 6-5.
Comfort tied it in the fifth after Ella Thiele hit into a fielder’s choice and drove in a run and it was knotted up at 6-6.
Llano added single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh frames for the 8-6 lead.
Comfort had one last chance to tie it or win it in the bottom of the seventh.
The Deer had a good start to the seventh and loaded the bases with a single, error and a walk with no outs. An infield fly turned into the first out and then a ground out led to a run but also cost Comfort another out to make it 8-7 with two down and a runner at third.
A fly out to right field ended it with the Deer a run short.
Kippy Sterling singled and drove in 2 runs, Ella Thiele picked up 2 RBI, Hope Van Geffen pushed in a run, Kaydence Stehling scored once, Anna Munoz took 2 walks, singled and scored once Taygan Rust walked twice and scored once, Moorea Davis singled, walked, picked up an RBI and scored 2 runs and Bella Hernandez singled and plated 2 runs.
Thiele went the distance in the circle and gave up 6 hits, 4 earned runs, 4 walks and she struck out 4.
