Boerne High took on Pieper in 26-5A soccer Tuesday night.
The BHS boys were at home and looking to spoil the Warriors perfect district record, while the Lady Greyhounds were on the road hunting for a playoff spot.
The BHS teams closed out the regular season Friday against New Braunfels.
Varsity Girls
Even though the Boerne girls were defeated by Pieper, 3-1, the Lady Hounds still clinched a playoff spot after Tuesday’s results.
The Boerne girls are 9-5-1 in district and 14-7-1 overall. They hosted New Braunfels in their regular-season finale Friday and a win or tie gives BHS third place in the district.
Smithson Valley, Pieper and Boerne have all locked up playoff spots, while the final slot left in 26-5A will either go to New Braunfels or Alamo Heights.
If Boerne beat New Braunfels, Alamo Heights advances but if New Braunfels ties or beats Boerne, the Unicorns advance. Also, if NB wins, they’ll claim third and bump Boerne to fourth place, but it won’t matter because the top two larger enrollment playoff teams go “big school” or to the D1 playoff bracket, while the smaller two playoff teams go to the DII bracket.
Boerne will go to the DII bracket regardless of Friday’s outcome, according to BHS coach Jeremy Shannon.
Sophie Harper recorded Boerne’s only goal Tuesday night against the Lady Warriors.
Varsity Boys
Tuesday’s match at Boerne ISD Stadium between Pieper and Boerne sure felt like a playoff game even though the outcome didn’t affect the district standings for the Warriors or Greyhounds.
Pieper was locked into first place and the Boerne boys were firmly in second place but that didn’t seem to matter as the match was played with a lot of intensity.
The Warriors were searching for a perfect record in 26-5A, while the Greyhounds wanted to play spoiler and hand Pieper its only district loss.
Pieper went on to claim the 2-0 win over the Hounds to close out district play at 16-0. They held a 1-0 lead until late when they added another score.
Tuesday’s shutout over Boerne gives the Warriors the sweep over the Hounds and marked the first time BHS has been shutout this year.
Boerne High is 11-3-1 in district and is 13-4-1 overall. The Hounds closed out the regular season with a road match Friday at New Braunfels.
