The Boerne Champion soccer teams were in action Tuesday against Wagner as they close out the final week of the regular season.

Champion’s boys squad hosted the Thunderbirds, while the Lady Chargers were on the road.

It was a quick turnaround for Champion, and they were back at it Thursday to play Kerrville Tivy, with the boys on the road and the girls set to play their final home game of the year.

Varsity Boys

In its final home game of the season, the Champion boys honored its seniors and played well by defeating the Thunderbirds, 7-2.

The Chargers were up 3-1 by halftime and then closed it out by winning the second half, 4-1, to get the lopsided win.

Juan Cardenas, Noah Umbreit, Thomas David, Ethan Souza and Jayden Powell all knocked in one goal each, while Bentley McCool recorded 2 goals.

Assists came from Simon Trevino, Ryder Misola, Emilio Linaje, Ryder Misola and Joey Toczysnki.

Seniors this year are Christian Fortezzo, Nathan Bell, Bentley McCool, Jayden Powell, Thomas David, Daniel Bazan, Julian Pinedo, Ryder Misola, Nico Linaje, Caleb Dehart, Joey Toczynski and H Vogt.

Champion was 3-12-5 overall and 3-8-4 in district and swept Wagner for two of their three wins heading into Thursday’s match at Kerrville.

Varsity Girls

Champion picked up its most dominant win of the year Tuesday after they defeated the Lady Thunderbirds, 8-0. The 8 goals mark the most they’ve scored in a game this year.

The Champion girls had a shot at a playoff spot heading into this week but had to beat Wagner and also needed some help.

Champion did its part by defeating the T-Birds, but unfortunately for the Lady Chargers, they didn’t get the help they needed and will miss the playoffs this year.

Alamo Heights defeated Wagner the next day, which knocked Champion from contention and means the final playoff spot in 26-5A will either go to the Mules or New Braunfels depending on what happened in Friday’s match between NB and Boerne High.

Smithson Valley, Pieper and Boerne High have claimed three of the four playoff spots available.
