THE BOOKWORM
I don’t know anything about brackets, but when it comes to mysteries, consider me your go-to-girl.
Need to know the names of mystery authors on the NYT bestseller list from 1989 for a trivia night? Hit me up. Curious to learn about a popular mystery author jailed for murder when she was a teenager? Find me at the library for the scoop.
Here are some recent mysteries I’ve read, and they’ll be in the library’s catalog soon, if you are a fan of the genre.
“The Last Draft” by Agatha Frost is the first in a new series centered around a bookshop in a charming English village. The protagonist Ellie Swan recently lost her job as a researcher for a TV company and returns to her hometown to help her grandmother run a bookstore.
Someone is found murdered in the bookstore and Ellie must use her research and detective skills to solve the mystery.
Another first book in a series, “A Murder of Crows” by Sarah Yarwood-Lovett is also set in England. Dr. Nell Ward is an ecologist working on the grounds of a local manor house and taking care of injured bats in her spare time.
When pulled into a murder inquiry, she is able to use her keen powers of observation in the natural world to help clear her name.
There are several books in this series, and the first four can be found as e-books through the Cloud Library app.
If you’ve already read through the Jimmy Perez series about the Shetland Islands by Ann Cleeves, you might want to read “The Shetland Mysteries” by Marsali Taylor.
The first book in this series is “Death on a Longship.” The heroine in this series is Cass Lynch, who grew up on the Shetland Islands and is an expert sailor.
The first mystery takes place on a Viking longship; Cass is working as the skipper of the ship while a major motion picture is being filmed on board.
Happy reading!
