Hondo defeats Deer with walk-off single

The Comfort softball team couldn’t hold a late lead against Hondo Friday and fell to the Owls.

Comfort was up 3-0 at one point but 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth by Hondo made it 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Owls put it away with 2 more runs for the 4-3 victory.

The Deer slip to 3-12 overall and played Lytle on Monday. Comfort is home Friday to host Llano as they kick off district play.

In the third, Kaydence Stehling singled and made it to third on an error. She later scored on a sac fly by Jordan Judkins for the 1-0 Comfort lead.

CHS added 2 more runs in the fifth and did it with two outs. Hope Van Geffen reached and later scored. Stehling singled and Taygan Rust doubled to bring in Stehling and the Deer were up 3-0.

It stayed there until the bottom of the sixth when the Owls began their comeback. Three Hondo singles and a Comfort error pushed in 2 runs and made it 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Comfort retired the first batter with a ground out, but the next three Owls reached thanks to a single, error and a walk to load the bases.

Another walk pushed in a run to tie it and then the next Hondo batter, Ainsley Bohlen, slapped a walk-off single to left field to end it.

Comfort outhit the Owls, 8-6, after Anna Munoz doubled, Rust doubled, singled and picked up an RBI, Stehling finished with 2 hits and scored a run, Kippy Sterling singled and scored, Van Geffen singled and scored and Lorena Cabral singled.

Ella Thiele tossed for the Deer and gave up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, walked 3 and struck out 3.
