Three Champion pitchers combine for 5-inning perfect game vs. Leander

The Champion baseball team bounced back from a tough outing against Smithson Valley and responded by winning five straight games at the Leander Tournament.

Champion’s 5-0 mark bumps their record to 10-3 overall. The Chargers will play two non-district games early during spring break against O’Connor and Reagan before returning to district play next week against Alamo Heights. The Chargers are 2-1 in district.

After getting shutout by Smithson Valley last Tuesday, 8-0, the Chargers were entered in the Leander tourney two days later and responded with a 12-0 win where three pitchers combined for a perfect game in five innings of work.

AJ Grizzaffi pitched 3 innings, Parker Davis tossed one frame and Brody Eisert threw one inning as well and the trio didn’t give up a hit or walk or allow a base runner.

Grizzaffi struck out 6 and Davis had 1 strike out.

Brody Eisert, Cal Isley and Sam Miller all hit doubles.

Up next, the Chargers trounced Glenn, 11-2, behind 11 hits.

Aidan Smith, Cal Isley and Garland Whitehead all doubled, while Whitehead also singled and scored 3 runs. Andrew Harrison and Isley both scored twice and Sam Miller picked up 2 RBI.

Parker Kelly was the winner pitcher after he went 4 innings and struck out 7. Andrew Garritano also threw in the game.

On Friday, Champion won a close one over Leander, 4-2. It was tied at 2-2 after four frames, but the Chargers pushed in 2 runs in the top of the fifth and held the lead until the end.

Champion had 10 singles, including 2 from Garland Whitehead and Jaedyn Yamaguchi, while Aidan Smith also collected 2 RBI.

Jackson Melanson tossed 4 innings and picked up the win. He struck out 7, walked 3, gave up 3 hits and 2 runs.

Owen Kuhl closed it out and scattered 3 hits over 3 innings and didn’t yield a run or walk.

Later on Friday, the Chargers picked up another lopsided win, this time over Austin Anderson, 12-1.

It was a close game until the Chargers blew it open in the sixth frame. Champion was up 4-1 going into the sixth and plated 8 runs to pull away despite Anderson turning a double play in the inning.

The Chargers batted 13 in the frame and used 5 walks, 2 errors, 2 singles, a double and a hit batter to score its 8 runs.

Sawyer Smith doubled and scored, Owen Kuhl recorded 3 hits and pushed in 2 runs, Cal Isley walked twice, while Aidan Smith had 2 hits and picked up 3 RBI.

Aidan Smith threw 78 pitches in 5 innings to pick up the win. He gave up 5 hits, 1 walk, 1 run and struck out 6 batters.

Ethan Coleman threw an inning and sat down 2 batters and didn’t give up a hit or run.

In its final game, the Chargers defeated Hendrickson, 7-4. Champion was consistent and scored at least one run through the first five frames.

Owen Kuhl tripled, drove in a run and scored and AJ Grizzaffi hit 2 doubles.

Parker Davis went four innings on the hill and yielded 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and fanned 3.

Brody Eisert tossed two innings and gave up 4 hits, 1 run and sat down 2.
