Alate rally by the Lady Greyhounds helped them etch their names into the BISD record books as the winner of the first softball game ever played between Boerne High and Boerne Champion.
At one point in Tuesday’s game, the Lady Hounds were trailing 4-0 but outscored the Lady Chargers down the stretch 9-1 and went on to claim bragging rights in their first meeting with the 9-5 win.
Chargers coach Sara Cammer said she was proud of her team’s effort. Champion outhit Boerne, 8-6, but it didn’t translate on the scoreboard.
“After the game we told them that we out hit them and we played hard but we need to find a way to finish,” she said.
BHS coach Chester Pettibon said his team settles in the longer the game goes.
“It’s the second or third time through the lineup when we start getting timing down,” he said. “Usually later in the game, that’s when we start excelling.”
Early in the game, it was the Chargers who were excelling at the plate after they scored 4 runs in the top of the fourth.
Mylie Parker doubled and later scored on a Tatum Cruz single. Reese Rogers came up and tripled to bring in Cruz and it was 2-0.
Two batters later, Torin Tucker smacked one over the right-field fence to bring in herself and Rogers and it was 4-0, but the Hounds cut the lead in half by the bottom of the inning.
Brooklynn Thomason singled and stole second. Breanna Krause doubled to bring in Thomason and Krause later scored on a sac fly by Lizzy Thornton and it was 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, Parker blasted a solo shot over the centerfield wall and the Chargers were up 5-2 but that would be their last run of the night. After that, the Greyhounds tallied the final 7 runs of the game.
Boerne had a good offensive inning in the bottom of the fifth and pushed in 4 runs.
The Hounds started by putting its first three runners on with a couple of singles and an error and scored 3 runs to tie it at 5-5 with no outs.
A fielder’s choice, walk and a wild pitch allowed BHS to score one more run for its first lead of the game at 6-5 before the Chargers could end the inning.
The Lady Hounds kept up the pressure and in the bottom of the sixth, Boerne took advantage of a Charger error and a single, followed by an Ava Renteria double to score 2 more runs for the 8-5 advantage.
Renteria later scored to help BHS pad its lead at 9-5.
The Chargers had one last at bat in the top of the seventh and put its first two runners on with a couple of infielder errors but a great catch by BHS third baseman Tessa Murphy on a line drive recorded the first out.
From there, the Lady Hounds turned an infield double play to end it.
Jesseanna Aguirre went the distance in the circle for BHS and picked up the win on 109 pitches. She gave up 8 hits, 5 runs, walked 3 and struck out 2.
Parker tossed 6 innings for the Chargers and yielded 6 hits, 5 earned runs, 1 walk and she fanned 5.
Pettibon said the Hounds were excited to play the Chargers.
“That was something we were fighting at the end of last week and into the weekend, even Monday,” he said. “We were talking about Boerne vs. Boerne Champion and said we needed to try and treat it like any other game.”
For Cammer, it’s the field where she helped the 2007 Boerne High girls win the state title and said it’s always great to go back there.
“That field holds some of the best memories of my life, so far,” she said. “I don’t think going back there will ever just be another game.”
The Lady Greyhounds are 2-3 in district 6-3 overall, while the Lady Chargers are 1-3 in district and 3-4 overall.
Boerne visited Alamo Heights Friday and is off Tuesday. Champion hosted Pieper Friday and plays at New Braunfels Tuesday.
