With the regular season winding down, the Boerne ISD girls soccer teams clashed in their second- round 26-5A meeting Friday night in Boerne.
Boerne Champion was about a minute away from completing the season sweep over the Boerne High girls this year but a late goal by the Lady Greyhounds prevented that from happening.
With the Chargers up 1-0, BHS’s Mahaley Merkens took a loose ball and drilled it in from just outside 30 yards for the equalizer with 1:11 left.
The Merkens shot was basically perfect and came in just under the crossbar and above the goalie’s hands to tie it up.
That’s where it stayed for the 1-1 final.
Grace Johnson tallied Champion’s only goal, assisted by Carsyn Bradley, which came in the first half and gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead by halftime.
Boerne High has still never beaten the Lady Chargers in girls soccer but Friday’s tie helps them and hurts Champion.
Friday’s 1-1 score makes Boerne 8-4-1 (13-6-1 overall) to give them 25 points in the district. The Lady Hounds are battling Alamo Heights for third place in 26-5A since the Mules have 8 wins also and were off last Friday.
Champion is sitting at 5-5-2 (6-8-2 overall) and has 17 points in the district standings. They are currently sitting in sixth place.
The Chargers played at Pieper Tuesday and host New Braunfels Friday.
The Lady Hounds host Alamo Heights Tuesday and are off Friday.
