Chargers play in San Antonio Baseball Classic

Boerne Champion played in the San Antonio Baseball Classic tourney last weekend and posted a 3-2 record.

Champion is 5-2 overall and resumed district play Tuesday at Smithson Valley. They are scheduled to be in the Leander tourney this weekend.

The Chargers opened the tourney with a 6-3 loss to MacArthur, a team they saw in the playoffs last year.

Own Kuhl, Sam Miller and Garland Whitehead had the team’s 3 hits, while Cal Isley, Kuhl and Austin Garritano all scored. Miller, Aidan Smith and Jaedyn Yamaguchi all picked up one RBI each.

Ethan Coleman, Brody Eisert and Garritano all threw in the game and Coleman and Garritano struck out 2 each.

Up next, the Chargers defeated Austin Vandegrift, 13-6, and scored 8 of those runs in the second.

Austin Garritano doubled and singled, while Garland Whitehead plated 2 runs and Andrew Harrison picked up 2 RBI.

Aidan Smith tossed 3 innings and won the game after he gave up 4 hits, 3 earned runs and fanned 3.

Parker Davis finished out the game and struck out 2.

On Friday, the Chargers were able to blank Burbank, 7-0. The Chargers knocked out 10 hits, including triples from Garland Whitehead and AJ Grizzaffi.

Whitehead added 3 singles, collected 3 RBI and scored twice, while Jaedyn Yamaguchi also knocked out 2 singles.

Owen Kuhl threw 6 innings and yielded 3 hits, no runs or walks and sat down 5. Austin Garritano tossed an inning and struck out 2.

Later in the day, the Chargers were shutout by Victoria East, 2-0.

Aidan Smith recorded the team’s only hit, while Owen Kuhl and Jaedyn Yamaguchi both walked.

Pearce Kelly went 4 innings on the hill and yielded 7 hits, 2 runs, no walks and struck out 3.

AJ Grizzaffi tossed the final 3 frames and didn’t give up a hit or run, while fanning 4.

In its final game of the tourney at NS, the Chargers pounded the Panthers of O’Connor, 14-2, behind 11 hits.

Champion scored 5 in the first, 7 in the second and 2 more in the third and finished with 11 hits.

Brody Bendele smacked a home run and scored 2 runs, while Owen Kuhl and Pearce Kelly both doubled. Kuhl also singled and pushed in 2 runs, Garland Whitehead walked twice and scored twice, Cal Isley plated 2 runs, Aidan Smith hit 2 singles, picked up 2 RBI and scored a run, Austin Garritano crossed home plate twice and Jaedyn Yamaguchi pushed in 2 runs.
