Lady Chargers boot Mules in extra innings

Boerne Champion picked up its first district win in softball last Friday and it was certainly a memorable victory for coach Sara Cammer in more ways than one.

The Chargers defeated visiting Alamo Heights, 5-4, in the bottom of the eighth frame after Ally Candler drove in the game-winning run from second to end it.

It was Cammer’s first district win as the Chargers head coach and it came against her former high school coach Jennifer Fox.

The Chargers are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in district. They were at Boerne High Tuesday for their first meeting and then host Pieper Friday.

Champion scored early in last Friday’s game with single runs in the first and second frames for the 2-0 lead. The Chargers added 2 more runs in the fifth and seemed to be in control at 4-0, but the Lady Mules made it interesting in the top of the sixth.

Alamo Heights knocked in 3 runs and it was a onerun game at 4-3. The Mules were able to tie it in the top of the seventh after scoring a run to make it 4-4.

Champion put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh but left them stranded with a strikeout and a groundout to send it to the eighth.

The Mules went down in order with two strikeouts from Charger pitcher Mylie Parker, while Parker fielded a ball hit up the middle and retired the runner at first to send it to the bottom half of the inning.

In the eighth, Hannah Perez reached on a ball misplayed by the Mules outfield to start the inning. The next two Charger batters struck out but Perez was able to swipe second to put the winning run in scoring position.

Candler came up with two outs and hit the ball up the middle. It was misplayed by the Mules shortstop and since there were two outs, Perez was running on contact and scored easily from second for the walk-off win.

Abby Brehmer had a strong game at the plate and finished with 4 hits, including a triple. She also drove in 2 runs and scored once.

Torin Tucker knocked out two doubles to go with a single, scored 2 runs and picked up an RBI, while Kavanagh recorded 2 runs.

Anna Hurst, Perez and Cruz all scored one run each.

Parker picked up the win and thew 140 pitches in the game. She gave up 7 hits, no earned runs, walked just one and struck out 9.
