Boerne soccer teams play Veterans Memorial and Smithson Valley

It’s been a busy week for the Boerne High girls soccer teams. After playing two matches early in the week, the Greyhounds concluded the week with a third game.

Because of the bad weather last Friday, Boerne’s matches with Veterans Memorial were moved to Monday of this week.

The Greyhounds also had their regularly scheduled matches with Smithson Valley on Tuesday and against Champion on Friday.

Both Greyhound team beat Veterans Memorial and lost to Smithson Valley.

For results on the Champion matches, see the Wednesday online edition of the Star.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Greyhounds were on the opposite ends of shutouts early this week after they beat Veterans Memorial 4-0 and were then kept off the board by Smithson Valley, 3-0.

Against the Lady Patriots, BHS was up 3-0 by halftime and Sophia Namvar tallied 2 goals, while Mahaley Merkins and Ocean Valenciano knocked in one goal each. Namvar also assisted on the Merkins goal.

Smithson Valley’s 3-0 win over the Lady Greyhounds Tuesday snapped Boerne’s five-match win streak. All three goals came on headers off corner kicks.

During those five wins, BHS won by a combined score of 13-0 and it helped them move up in the district standings.

BHS is 8-4 in 26-5A and tied with Alamo Heights for third, although the Mules beat Boerne in their first-round meeting.

The Lady Hounds will get the chance to even their series with Alamo Heights when they host the Mules on March 4.

Before that, they received the same chance when they visited Champion on Friday after the Lady Chargers defeated the Lady Hounds in the first round of district.

Varsity Boys

The Boerne boys had a big win over Veterans Memorial, 7-1, and then dropped a close one to Smithson Valley, 3-2.

The Greyhounds are still in good shape in 26-5A despite the loss and stood at 9-2-1 in 26-5A after Tuesday.

Boerne has a pretty good grip on second place and is trying to catch Pieper, which is still undefeated in district at 12-0.

Against the Patriots, Ramzy Handal tallied 3 goals, Shane Garcia added 2 goals, while Kolton Fischer and Shae Gonzales finished with 1 goal apiece.

Against the Rangers, Felix Theiss and Liam Griffiths both netted single goals.

The Greyhounds have three regular-season matches left on the schedule after Friday’s clash with cross-town rival Champion and have their bye on March 7.
