Tivy team tops Boerne baseball bunch

Boerne High resumed district baseball action Tuesday with a road trip to Kerrville to take on the Tivy Antlers.

The Greyhounds have only played two games this year after a tournament scheduled for last weekend was canceled.

BHS won its district opener on Feb. 18 against Wagner, but the Antlers handed the Greyhounds their first loss of the season Tuesday in Kerrville.

The Antlers edged Boerne by a run, 4-3, to leave the Hounds at 1-1 overall and 1-1 in district. Boerne is scheduled to play in the San Antonio Classic this weekend. They opened with Socorro and Pioneer.

After that, they’ll host Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday to wrap up their series with the Antlers.

The Antlers never trailed in Tuesday’s game and struck first in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. Three walks by BHS pitching and a single by Dom Vasquez knocked in the two runs for the 2-0 lead.

Boerne answered in the top of the fourth with 2 runs of its own to tie it up. Hudson McNew doubled and then Ryan Hooper reached on a bunt and moved McNew to third.

Hooper stole second and then Jackson Grimes grounded out to bring in McNew from third for Boerne’s first run.

Hooper made it to third on the Grimes groundout and later scored on a Jake Perez single to make it 2-2.

Kerrville jumped back on top in the fifth with 2 more runs. A couple of walks and a single, along with a wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Tivy to pull ahead, 4-2.

In the sixth, Hooper doubled and his courtesy runner, Colton Shaver, moved to third on a passed ball. From there, Perez came through with another RBI single and the Tivy lead was down to 4-3 with only one out.

Perez made it to second in the inning but was stranded there after a pop up and a ground out ended the inning with the Greyhounds down a run.

In the top of the seventh, Boerne kept the Antlers off the board with a double play, and in the bottom of the frame, McNew singled with two outs to put the tying run on base.

The next BHS batter popped up to end the threat and the Antlers claimed the win.

Boerne finished with 6 hits, including a double and 2 singles from McNew, who also scored a run.

Hooper doubled and scored, Perez hit 2 RBI singles and Shaver scored a run.

Jackson Grimes went 3 innings on the hill and gave up 2 runs, 2 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5.

Campbell Jackson tossed the final three frames and yielded 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks and he also fanned 5.
