AUSTIN - The Boerne Champion girls swim team turned into a gold-medal performance Saturday in Austin and won the 5A team title.

The Lady Chargers clinched the title by winning the final event of the night when they took first place in the 400yard freestyle relay. Champion had to win that last race and needed Frisco Reedy to finish 7th or 8th and both happened to give the Lady Chargers the title by 3 points, 176-173.

Champion won 9 state medals at the event - four boys and five girls - and set four 5A state records.

The Champion girls were first, and the Charger boys were sixth, while Boerne High had a competitor just miss out on a state medal.

Chargers coach Scott Slay said he was proud of everyone in the program.

“It was unbelievable,” he said. “We said ‘let’s put ourselves in the ball game and hope for the best and we had a great meet.”

For complete results for the Chargers and Greyhounds, look in this weekend’s issue of the Boerne Star.
