Eagles punch ticket to state for first time since 2014

On paper, it looked like the Geneva School of Boerne boys basketball team’s match up last Saturday in the regional finals against Hill Country Christian School of Austin was going to be close.

It featured two top-10 TAPPS 4A teams in the state with Geneva coming in at No. 3 and HCCSA entering at No. 9.

While it looked close on paper, it was another thing when the teams stepped out onto the court The Eagles dominated the contest in San Marcos and went on to post a 24-point victory, 71-47.

Geneva advances to the TAPPS state tourney for the first time since the 2014 season, their first time as a 4A school.

Geneva (31-5) plays the No. 1 TAPPS 4A team in the state, St. Francis Episcopal School – Houston (26-8) Friday, Feb. 28, in Waco, 2 p.m.

Friday’s winner plays Saturday in the state finals against the winner of the McKinney Christian Academy – Lubbock Christian School contest on Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

The Eagles have their Big 3 with players Colton Lutz, Jake Roberson and Wyatt Bruss, who score the majority of their points but it was a 3-pointer from Harlen Mangum to start the game that sparked the team last Saturday, according to coach Julius McNeal.

“Magnum’s 3 from the corner on the opening possession set the tone for the game,” he said.

While Geneva’s Big 3 combined for 59 of their 71 points, McNeal said limiting the Austin school to 47 points was the difference.

“We put up a lot of points tonight, but won this game on the defensive end,” he said.

Colton Lutz finished with 24 points, Jake Roberson netted 22 points, Wyatt Bruss scored 13, Harlen Mangum tallied 9 and Jack Walker Harden chipped in with 3.
