A 55-year-old Boerne resident, Johnny Rodriguez Jr., died in a fiery accident in San Antonio last week after his Toyota Corolla was hit by an 18-wheeler on Interstate 10.

Rodriguez – who resided at the Oxbow Hill Country Apartments, formally known as the Carrington Apartments on Johns Road, was traveling north on the interstate toward Boerne on Friday when a tire on a nearby 18-wheeler traveling in the same direction blew, according to a preliminary report from the San Antonio Police Department.

The 18-wheeler, which was hauling gravel, swerved to the left after its tire blew, pushing Rodriguez’s car into a concrete barrier dividing the northbound and south bound lanes of the interstate. Rodriguez’s car then went onto the concrete barrier and hit a metal pillar, according to the report.

Rodriguez was transported to the hospital by ambulance, but he died from the injuries at the hospital.

During the accident, the 18-wheeler also struck a Jeep Latitude traveling in the northbound lanes of the interstate, and the driver of the Jeep was also transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary report from SAPD states the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office began conducting a death investigation once Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the hospital.
