Boerne’s Patrick Heath Public Library has been honored with the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association.
With only 102 out of 542 public libraries across Texas recognized this year, this distinction places the library among some of the biggest library systems in the Lone Star State.
“Truly, this award is a reflection of the incredible work our library staff does every day,” Natalie Shults, library director, said. “We’re constantly looking for ways to innovate, engage with the community and provide meaningful resources for our patrons.”
The library averages nearly 680 programs every year and welcomes 170,000 visitors annually. In 2024, the library saved card members more than $2.9 million by providing access to library materials, databases and other valuable resources.
The award recognizes libraries that go above and beyond in 10 key areas, including community outreach, literacy support, workforce development and digital inclusion. The Patrick Heath Public Library stood out thanks to several new and ongoing initiatives, including: — The Memory Lab, funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, which helps residents digitize personal and local history items.
— The Library of Things, a collection of non-traditional items available for checkout, such as tools, kitchen appliances and educational kits. — Family Place Library designation, which enhances early childhood programs and resources for families with young children.
Boerne City Manager Ben Thatcher also praised the library’s impact on the community.
“In an ever-changing world, the library continues to develop new programs to best serve patrons and be a vital resource for our community,” Thatcher said. “This award is well deserved and speaks to the staff’s dedication to making the library a welcoming space for all.”
The Texas Municipal Library Directors Association, an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League, gives the Achievement of Library Excellence Award each year to libraries that provide exceptional programs and services.
With this latest recognition, the Patrick Heath Public Library reinforces its role as a key part of Boerne’s thriving community.
