All the offense between the Boerne Champion and Veterans Memorial boys soccer teams came in the second half last Friday at Charger Field.

Champion and Veterans Memorial went into halftime tied at 0-0 but the Chargers broke through in the second half with a pair of goals that carried the team to a 2-1 win over the Patriots.

The Chargers have played well all year but it wasn’t showing up in their win-loss record until recently.

Champion didn’t record a victory in its first 10 matches but have won two of its last three matches as the team is starting to finish.

Their two 26-5A wins have the Chargers standing at 2-3-4 in district and 2-6-5 overall. They are within striking distance of a few teams ahead of them with seven matches to go heading into Tuesday when they visited Smithson Valley.

The Chargers are off Friday and host Alamo Heights next Tuesday.

In last Friday’s match, the Chargers were dominating possession in the first half and finally got on the board in the 41st minute on a Bentley McCool goal on the assist from H Vogt.

In the 55th minute, Nico Linaje knocked in another goal on the Nathan Bell assist and the Chargers pulled ahead 2-0.

Veterans Memorial erased the shutout with a goal in the 74th minute but Champion’s defense held tough and didn’t allow the equalizer.

The Chargers and Patriots played to a 1-1 tie in their first-round meeting and Friday’s match between the two kicked off the second round for both.
