After retirement from the film industry after 42 years as a set decorator on the West Coast, Mary Olivia McIntosh was able to return to her first loves — drawing and painting.

Catching up, as it were, starting late in her career, Mary painted almost every day and loved every minute of it.

Mary described success, first and foremost, as the pleasure and satisfaction of working at her easel — finishing a piece that she felt good about, choosing how it would be shown, and then hanging it in one of the three galleries that shared her visions.

Inspiration was found through continuing education from classes and workshops. Always willing to share her knowledge and skill, Mary remained active in the local art communities by teaching and providing demonstrations.

Truly appreciating all aspects of Mother Nature, Mary found inspiration for her paintings everywhere; traveling here and abroad, and making simple backyard observations.

Animal portraits were part of her repertoire as she was an animal lover, both domestic and wild. Mary’s process can be found in her artist’s statement, “I invite you to experience these scenes through my eyes and all of my senses, as it was when I was there. As I paint, I become one with the scene. All of the light, the shadows, the color and the textures of Nature’s beauty are there for me to capture.”

When Mary McIntosh joined the Carriage House Gallery Partnership in 2021, she brought with her enthusiasm, exceptional pastel art and intriguing photography. Her many years of travel are reflected in her work, and she generously shared stories of her adventures across the United States and as far away as Africa.

During Boerne’s Rod Run Shows, Mary enjoyed showing off her limited- edition Corvette. The gallery partners enjoyed Mary’s talent and skills as she decorated themed Christmas trees each year and maintained the display window with artists’ works. Or, simply on a workday at the gallery, she could be found barefoot at her easel, music playing, working on her latest pastel.

As Linda Chalberg shared, “We miss her terribly ... she was one of a kind and a friend.”

Mary’s artwork will be offered for sale at the Carriage House Gallery through the end of February at 110 Rosewood Ave. in Boerne. For details, call 830-248-1184, or refer to www.carriagehousegallerytx.
