LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The ‘choice’ belongs to private schools

Editor, The reporting of the voucher debate in the Feb. 9 Boerne Star was very accurate, except for one glaring misconception. The reporter wrote: “Parents who apply for assistance could receive approximately $10,000 to send their child to the school of their choice.”

This is the most held misconception that is circulating around the population of Texas — which derives from calling it “school choice” when it really should be called “private school’s choice.”

That is because, unlike the public schools, private schools don’t have to accept any voucher/ESA child if they do not want to — for any reason, which they do not have to divulge.

So, it’s not really the parent’s free choice at all. And that is why the current ESA bill is not fair and likely to be discriminatory.
