Just when it looked like Tuesday’s first-round playoff game between Boerne High and Cedar Park was headed to overtime, the Timberwolves sank a near halfcourt shot to shock the Lady Greyhounds and bring an end to their season.

Cedar Park’s Hope Edwards inbounded the ball to a teammate near halfcourt with 1.39 seconds left in the contest that was knotted up at 40-40.

The teammate quickly tossed the ball back to Edwards, who basically launched a shot from just inside half-court that swished in at the buzzer to bring the game to a stunning conclusion and give the Lady Wolves a 43-40 victory.

Boerne finishes the year at 21-13 overall and will graduate four seniors that helped guide the team to the last two regional championships as a 4A school.

BHS moved up to 5A this year and was hoping to repeat their success but had a tough draw in the opening round of the playoffs with Cedar Park.

The Lady Wolves came in ranked No. 8 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A-DII poll.

Boerne gave Cedar Park all they could handle in Tuesday’s game that was back and forth until the very end.

The Timberwolves had a fast start and went up 8-0, but a couple of 3s from Savannah Salinas and another from Chloe Donnell helped BHS close out the opening quarter on a 11-2 run and hold an 11-10 lead at the end of the first period.

The second quarter contained 10 ties or lead changes before Cedar Park took a 25-22 advantage into halftime.

Boerne opened up its biggest lead of the game in the third quarter thanks to a 7-0 spurt.

The Hounds were down 27-25, but a pair of Meredith Mcleod free throws tied it up. Donnell hit a 3, and then stole an inbounds pass that she passed to Jenna Ruede for an easy bucket and BHS was up by five points, 32-27.

Boerne only scored one more point the rest of the stanza on a Donnell free throw, while Cedar Park closed out the third on a 5-0 run to hold a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 34-33.

The final stanza was no different than the other three with six ties or lead changes before it ended.

Cedar Park drained a 3 with 2:45 remaining for a 40-37 edge before Donnell answered with a 3 of her own with 40 ticks on the clock to tie it up at 40-all.

The Wolves missed a 3 on their next possession and Boerne rebounded. BHS called its last timeout with 8.4 seconds but turned the ball over after they were whistled for a 5-second violation after they didn’t inbound the ball in time.

The ball went back to the Cedar Park team, which burned some clock before calling a timeout with 1.39 seconds.

From there, Edwards worked her magic and drilled the game winner for one more lead change, the 23rd tie or lead change of the contest.

It was Boerne’s four seniors that scored all 40 of their points in Tuesday’s game. Chloe Donnell paced the team with 17 points, Meredith Mcleod netted 15, Savannah Salinas scored 6 and Jenna Ruede added 2.
