The softball teams from Boerne ISD opened their 2025 seasons this week in cold and blustery conditions.

Both had their games moved from Tuesday to later in the week because of the bad weather.

Boerne High was scheduled to play Tuesday against Wagner in their district opener but the contest was moved to Wednesday.

Champion had its game with Veterans Memorial moved from Tuesday to Thursday because of wet conditions at Charger Field.

BHS won to start district at 1-0, while the Chargers were defeated to begin league play at 0-1.

The Greyhounds and Chargers are playing in the Seguin tourney this weekend before resuming district play this coming week.

While the temperature was cold and ended with a windchill factor of 31, the Boerne bats were hot as they banged out 20 hits on their way to a 14-4 run-rule victory over the Lady Thunderbirds in 6 innings.

BHS was up 8-4 and scored 6 run its in last two at bats to kick in the mercy rule, with 5 of those coming in the fifth frame.

Greyhounds coach Chester Pettibon said it was odd starting district right out of the gate and noted that it took some adjusting.

“The preparation for this is different. We used to not start district until spring break,” he said. “Before, you had a lot more time to work out your lineup. It’ll be more of a feeling out process as to how we play our lineup going forward.”

In Wednesday’s game, BHS had Wagner on the ropes and was up 5-0 by the end of the second but made a few mistakes to let the Thunderbirds back into it with 3 runs in the top of the third.

The Lady Hounds committed a few errors in that inning but Pettibon said they’ll work that out.

“We have youth and those young ones will get the hang of it, it’s just going to take them reps,” he said. “There were some first-game jitters, but they’ll work those things out as we go.”

Ava Renteria, Cerissa Nasis and Brooklyn Thomason all finished with 3 hits, while Renteria drove in 3 runs and Nasis and Thomason picked up 2 RBI.

Lizzy Thornton, Riley Partin, Ryleigh Hastings and Leni Caldwell all knocked out 2 hits as well and Maddie Vasquez added a hit.

Renteria and Thomason both scored 3 runs, while Partin and Caldwell crossed home plate twice.

Jesseanna Aguirre went all 6 innings in the circle and gave up 4 hits and 1 earned run against 4 walks, while striking out 11.

Thursday’s district opener against Veterans Memorial got away from the Chargers late in the game after a push from the Patriots in its final two at bats resulted in a 19-6 win.

A couple of errors in the top of the first inning by the Chargers allowed Veterans Memorial to plate 3 runs and take the quick 3-0 lead before the Chargers had ever been to the plate.

Champion tied it in the bottom of the fourth with 3 runs and then both teams scored 2 runs in the fifth to make it 5-5 heading to the sixth.

That’s when things turned in favor of Veterans Memorial. The Patriots blew it open with 9 runs in the top of the sixth after they batted 12 in the inning and took a 14-5 lead.

Chargers coach Sara Cammer said there were highs and lows for her team.

“We showed a lot of promise in the beginning and came back to tie it up,” she said. “Their bats came alive in the end and they made adjustments at the plate.”

Champion answered with a single run in the bottom of the sixth and it was 14-6 heading to the seventh.

In their last at bat, the Lady Patriots pushed in 5 more runs and opened up a 19-6 lead before the Chargers could get three outs.

Once they did, it went to the bottom of the seventh where Champion managed two base runners but couldn’t bring them in.

Reese Rogers doubled, singled and picked up 3 RBI, Anna Hurst legged out a triple, scored and drove in a run, Mylie Parker singled, scored and pushed up a run, Abby Brehmer walked twice and scored 2 runs and Torin Tucker took 3 walks.

Parker went 5 innings and struck out 7, while Hurst tossed the final two frames and fanned a batter.

Champion committed 10 errors in the game and Cammer said it’s something they’ll focus on.

“We’re a work in progress,” she said. “We have work to do, but I see so much potential for this team and reminded them it’s just the beginning.”
