Boerne High never trailed in last Friday’s third- place tiebreaker game against Kerrville Tivy at Charger Gym in Boerne.

BHS secured third place in 26-5A with Friday’s 53-36 victory over the Lady Antlers.

The Lady Greyhounds faced Cedar Park in the first round of the playoffs Tuesday at Wimberley.

Cedar Park entered the contest ranked No. 15 in the state, but Boerne coach Amy Ruede said they were looking forward to the challenge.

“We’re playing well, this is the time you want to be peaking and I feel like we’re getting on a roll,” she said.

Kerrville Tivy tied it twice in Friday’s game but those ties came early at 2-2 and 4-4.

After a Chloe Donnell bucket made it 6-4 in favor the Lady Hounds, they led the rest of the way.

A couple of 3-pointers from Donnell and Meredith Mcleod gave Boerne a 14-9 lead to end the first quarter.

BHS missed its first five 3s of the game and Mcleod’s 3 was their first of the night to make them 1 for 6 from long range to start the game, but Ruede said they just have to keep shooting.

“They were all good looks, our feet were set, they weren’t forced,” said Ruede, whose team warmed up from the outside and eventually finished 8 for 20 for 40 percent shooting from beyond the arc. “We’ll take those shots, those are good shots for us, so we just have to keep shooting – shooters shoot.”

A couple of 3s from Tivy’s Kyra Wheatfall and Emma Schumacher in the second quarter, pulled the Antlers to within 2 points on two occasions, but a Donnell 3 and a bucket at the buzzer by Oleyvia Ramos resulted in a 5-1 spurt to end the half and give the Lady Hounds a 27-21 lead at the break.

Boerne’s did a good job against the Tivy post players, who out-heighted the Boerne team.

“We had a few little defensive lapses in the first half but we got those cleaned up at halftime,” Ruede said. “I was proud of our defensive effort; they outsize us and I thought we did a good job of battling.”

Boerne pulled away in the third quarter and outscored the Antlers, 16-4.

Kerrville received a bucket from Jordan McLaughlin early in the third but then didn’t score again for more than 5 minutes. By that time, Boerne had gone on a 13-2 run and opened up a 40-23 lead.

An Addison Saur 3 to end the third, plus a Donnell 3 to start the fourth quarter, along with free throws from Savannah Salinas and Ramos results in an 8-0 spurt to help Boerne open up its biggest advantage of the game at 23 points (48-25) and basically put it out of reach with five minutes left in the contest.

A Mcleod basket with a minute on the clock made it 53-30 before Tivy scored the final six points of the game for the final of 53-36.

Donnell hit four 3s and finished with 14 points in the game, Mcleod tallied a couple of 3s and scored 13, Saur added 9 points, Salinas netted 8, Ramos chipped in with 5 and Jenna Ruede had 4 points.
