The Boerne Champion girls basketball team needed a victory Tuesday vs. Kerrville Tivy to finish out the regular season with a winning record.
Champion almost made it happen as they played the Lady Antlers tough on Senior Night, but Tivy still had enough firepower and went on to record the 64-53 win.
The Lady Chargers finish out the year at 16-17 overall and went 4-12 in district.
Not only would a victory have guaranteed a winning record for the Chargers, but it would have helped Boerne High since Tivy’s win kept them tied with the Lady Hounds for third.
BHS and Tivy broke the tie Friday at Charger Gym as they head into the playoffs, along with Wagner and Pieper. Wagner and Pieper” were also tied, but for first place.
Champion put a scare into the Antlers and held the lead at halftime, 29-27, as the Chargers hit four 3s in the half, three of them from Addison Darter.
Kerrville created some space in the third by doubling up Champion in the quarter, 16-8, and pulled ahead by six points at 43-37.
In the fourth quarter, the Chargers battled but couldn’t catch the Antlers after Tivy pushed the lead to near double digits.
Tivy won the final stanza, 21-16, and was good at the free-throw line after they went 9 for 10 in the quarter.
Addison Darter shot it well for the Chargers and hit six 3-pointers to finish with 18, Hailey Winn also had a good night and scored 14 points, Ainsley Darter scored 7, Abby Sommer knocked down a couple of 3s and scored 6, while Taylor Burk and Savannah Wayment added 4 points apiece.
It was Senior Night and seven seniors were honored. They are trainer Heidi Francis, along with players Ainsley Darter, Addison Darter, Hailey Winn, Taylor Burk, Abby Sommer and Savannah Wayment.
