Chargers, Unicorns convert PKs to finish tied, 1-1

“ One penalty kick deserves another” is probably the best way to sum up Tuesday’s district soccer match between Boerne Champion and New Braunfels at Charger Field.

Tuesday’s boys contest was scoreless for the majority of the match but the Unicorns were issued a penalty kick with about 10 minutes left and converted for the 1-0 lead.

Turnabout is fair play, and with 1:40 remaining in the contest, the Chargers were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box.

Bentley McCool was selected to take the kick and approached the ball. The senior used a hesitation move and then went to the bottom left corner of the goal for the equalizer to make it 1-1.

Neither team scored in the final 100 seconds and it ended at 1-1, leaving the Chargers with another tie as their first victory of the season still eludes them.

Champion is 0-2-4 in district and is 0-5-5 overall. The Chargers were at Wagner Friday and host Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday to close out the first round.

Champion coach Dustin Gold said they’ve played well all season but need to start winning some matches. He added that it’s getting close to “desperation time” for his team.
