Karen Gibson’s passion for history and genealogy led her on an inspiring journey to uncover and commemorate the legacy of her patriot ancestor, Revolutionary War Cpl. Augustine Lawless, and his wife, Sarah Dillon Lawless.

As such, Gibson received the Excellence in Historic Preservation Certificate and Medal from the George W. Kendall Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for her extraordinary dedication to preserving and honoring an American Revolutionary War patriot.

This prestigious accolade recognizes individuals who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to safeguarding historical legacies for future generations.

Her research began in 2011 after discovering a collection of historical documents in her late mother’s estate. These materials, including letters and a map referencing Cpl. Lawless’s burial site, set her on a determined quest to locate and honor his final resting place.

Through meticulous investigation and collaboration with landowner Baker Carnes, Karen successfully identified the original land deed and pinpointed the burial location on a working cattle and hay farm in Jamestown, Kentucky.

To commemorate this significant discovery, a dedication ceremony brought together two Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapters from two states with 90 attendees paying tribute to Cpl. Lawless.

Held at the Lawless family burial site on the Baker Carnes family farm, the ceremony marked a historic moment in honoring his legacy. A 2-foot-by-2-foot bronze marker, mounted on an 8-foot pole, was installed as a permanent tribute to Cpl. Lawless and his wife, ensuring their memory endures for generations.

Representatives from the George W. Kendall chapter in Boerne gathered with the Jane Lampton chapter out of Jamestown, Kentucky, along with members of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and other esteemed organizations to celebrate this remarkable achievement.

Gibson’s unwavering dedication to historic preservation has ensured that the contributions of the Revolutionary War corporal are rightfully remembered and honored.

“Gibson’s inspiring efforts serve as a beacon for those committed to protecting and celebrating our nation’s heritage,” said Amanda Bailey, public relations committee chair for the Kendall DAR chapter.
