Both Boerne Champion basketball teams faced a tough task last Friday when they took on playoff-bound Wagner.

The Wagner boys and girls teams have a combined record of 26-2 in 26-5A and are poised to either win their respective districts or at least earn a share of the 26-5A title this year.

Wagner was able to sweep the Chargers last Friday after the boys won in Boerne and the girls lost on the road.

Champion was in action Tuesday against Kerrville Tivy and it was the last game of the year for the girls, while the boys still have a few games left.

Varsity Boys

Last Friday’s 68-54 home loss to the Thunderbirds keeps the Chargers winless in the second round of district and eliminates Champion from playoff contention.

Champion is 21-11 overall and 4-9 in district.

The Chargers have three games left on the schedule and were at Kerrville Tivy Tuesday. They’ll play at Veterans Memorial Friday and then host Smithson Valley to close out the regular season.

At 4-9, the Chargers can’t catch the fourth-place team in the district since they only have four wins, while Alamo Heights, New Braunfels and Pieper all have nine wins.

Wagner was up 41-25 at halftime after scoring 28 points in the second quarter as their offense got rolling with five 3s.

The Chargers outscored the Thunderbirds in the second half, 29-27.

Varsity Girls

Wagner recorded a 75-22 victory over the Chargers last Friday.

The Champion girls have a goal of finishing the 2024-25 season with a winning record and still have that opportunity but had to beat Kerrville on Tuesday in their regular-season finale.

Champion is 16-16 overall and 4-11 in district.

A win by the Chargers on Tuesday would not only give the Chargers a winning record but would also help Boerne High in the district standings and give BHS third place if they beat New Braunfels.

Wagner had four girls in double figures and was paced by Utah Utes signee LA Sneed, who finished with 21 points.
