After seven successful seasons as the head coach of the Boerne High football program, Che Hendrix has resigned and will become an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas.
Hendrix will work as a defensive analyst and coach nickel backs for the Razorbacks.
Hendrix informed the district and his coaching staff of his decision last Monday and said it was a tough choice, but added that it was the right choice.
“Boerne has been an incredible place to raise our family, but I’m excited for this adventure and to be headed to Arkansas and getting a chance to coach in the SEC,” he said. “This is an opportunity I cannot pass up.”
In seven seasons with the Greyhounds, he finished with a record of 71-19. Prior to coming to BHS, Hendrix coached at Frisco Heritage and his wins there, coupled with his victories in Boerne help Hendrix reach the 100win plateau during the 2024 playoffs as the BHS program celebrated its 100-year anniversary.
Thirty-five of those 100 wins came in the last three seasons as Hendrix’s tenure was marked by deep playoff runs and included two regional championships.
The Greyhounds made the postseason every year under Hendrix and played on Thanksgiving weekend in five of his seven seasons.
They went into December twice during that time and their best year came in 2022 when the Greyhounds were 15-0 to start the season and advanced to the 4A DI state championship game in Arlington.
In that contest at Jerry World, Boerne was up 21-0 at halftime, but China Spring came back to win it on a last-second field goal, 24-21. Hendrix said he’s never gone back to watch the second half of that game film.
In their first foray in the 5A ranks in 2024, Boerne won the 5A-DII regional title before they were defeated by eventual state champs Richmond Randle in the state semifinals in Waco.
Hendrix said everybody that participated in the program deserves credit for their success.
“I’m extremely proud of our coaches, players, community and the athletic program we have built,” he said. “The past seven years have been incredible” Che and his wife Lindsey have three sons, all of whom have played for their dad. His oldest son, Houston, now plays at the Air Force Academy; Hutson is a senior at BHS and will sign with the University of Arkansas this coming week, while Hank is wrapping up his sophomore year of high school and has a football offer from TCU.
Both Hutson and Hank are on the Greyhound basketball team and are expected to finish out this season before moving to Arkansas.
Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech said they will post the job opening and expects to hire the new coach by March 1. Leech added that they will look both internally and externally before filling the job.
Leech said they will miss Hendrix and the contributions he and his family have made.
“While we are sad to leave him leave Boerne High School, we are immensely proud of the legacy he leaves behind and grateful for the incredible impact he has had on our community,” Leech posted on X. “Coach Hendrix has built a strong foundation for BHS Athletics and we are committed to continuing that tradition of excellence as we begin the search for our next head football coach and athletic coordinator.”
