The largest soccer crowd of the year showed up at Boerne ISD Stadium Tuesday night to watch the Boerne High girls renew their district rivalry with Boerne Champion.

The two BISD teams hadn’t faced off since 2013 but the rivalry apparently hasn’t lost any steam as the teams ramped up their intensity Tuesday in sloppy weather conditions.

Champion coach Ali Zingelmann said her team had talked about playing the Greyhounds every single day since the season started and added that it’s what helped propel them to a 2-0 win over BHS.

“It’s a small-town rivalry and several of the Boerne and Champion girls play club soccer together so the girls were excited for this game,” she said. “Overall, both the girls and I loved the atmosphere, that was the biggest crowed we have ever played for and the girls really used it to drive and motivate them.”

Champion has never lost to the Lady Greyhounds and is 7-0-2 all time against them after going 6-0-2 in their eight meetings between 2010-2013.

The Chargers scored once in each half on Tuesday and Greyhounds coach Jeremy Shannon said it was a case of missed opportunities for his squad.

“We have to manufacture goals, that was the main message to the team (afterwards),” he said. “When the opportunity presents itself, we have to take advantage.”

Lily Alejo recorded a goal in the first half for the Chargers, while Grace Johnson knocked one in during the second half. Carsyn Bradley and Jayme Harrell both tallied assists in the match.

Champion’s win improves the team to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in district. They hosted Pieper Friday and visit New Braunfels Tuesday.

Zingelmann said her girls rose up to the challenge.

“I’m very proud of the team and how they each performed in this big moment,” she said.

Boerne High is 3-2 in district and 8-4 overall. After a 3-0 start, the Lady Hounds have dropped two in a row and been shutout in both cases.

Despite the setback, Shannon noted that his team also enjoyed playing before a big crowd.

“It was an exciting atmosphere and a good game,” he said.
