When the UIL put Boerne High and Boerne Champion in the same district for this school year and next, it pitted the Chargers and Greyhounds against each other for the first time in most sports, but that wasn’t the case with soccer.
Back when there were only two classifications in soccer – 5A and 6A – any 4A team that played soccer had to play up at the 5A level, so that meant Boerne High and Boerne Champion were in the same soccer district from 2010-2013.
In 2014, the UIL added a separate 4A classification and the Greyhounds had the chance to compete against schools their own size. (It was the same with swimming before the UIL added a 4A state meet, BHS had to compete as a 5A in swimming.)
Right from the start, the BHS girls did well in soccer as a 4A and made it three rounds in 2014 and then advanced all the way to the state tourney in 2015 where they lost to Kennedale in the finals, 4-3.
After not playing against each other for 11 years, the Boerne – Champion soccer rivalry was rekindled this week.
Tuesday’s win by the Greyhound boys team marked their first win in the series, while

Jan. 29, 2010 – Champion 6, BHS 0 *Feb. 24, 2010 – Champion 5, BHS 1 the Lady Chargers have never lost to BHS, although the Lady Greyhounds have tied them twice, once in their first meeting.
The Boerne Star was there at that first meeting between the two BISD schools on Jan. 29, 2010. Interestingly, there were two sets of siblings paired up against each other on that January day.
Claire Etter played for the Lady Chargers and Cheryl Etter suited up for the Lady Greyhounds.
It was the same on the boys side as Zach Strain played for the Chargers and his brother Aaron Strain laced up for the Greyhounds.
