The Boerne Champion girls basketball team played one of its best games of the year Tuesday when they defeated New Braunfels, 60-48.
Champion has a goal of finishing out the season with a winning record and Tuesday’s victory will help in that pursuit. It puts them at 16-15 overall (4-10 in district).
The Lady Chargers have two games left after Tuesday and visited Wagner Friday and then host Kerrville Tivy Tuesday to close out the season. One more win will guarantee them a winning record this year.
Champion held the lead for most of the first half and was up 9-7 after one quarter and then took a 26-18 lead into halftime after they won the second stanza, 17-11.
New Braunfels had a strong start to the third and tied it up at 32-32 with a 14-6 run, but the Chargers bumped the lead back to nine points at 45-36 by the end of the quarter.
The Unicorns made another push in the fourth period and pulled within 3 at 47-44 with 4:24 left, but Champion pulled away from there with a 13-4 spurt to end it.
NB started fouling in that fourth quarter to stop the clock and sent the Chargers to the free-throw line where they made 8 of 12 to secure the win.
Ainsley Darter was 5 for 6 at the line in the fourth quarter and finished with 9 points. Taylor Burk scored 6 in the fourth, including two free throws and tallied 8 points in the game.
Savannah Wayment banked in a 3 in the fourth and scored 7, Addison Darter knocked down four 3s and netted 12, Abby Sommer scored 5 and made a 3-pointer, Hailey Winn scored in every quarter and finished the game with 7 points, Saoirse Ray added 3 points, Kam Edwards scored 6 in the third and finished with 8 and Jordyn Davis hit a free throw.
