New Braunfels pulls off sweep of Champion in boys basketball

New Braunfels was able to record the season sweep over the Champion boys basketball team after they defeated the Chargers Tuesday, 66-59.

The Unicorns beat Champion in the first round of district play on Dec. 20 (52-43) and currently stand in second place in the district heading into Friday.

Tuesday’s loss by the Chargers is their fifth in a row and has them in seventh place in the 26-5A standings. Only four teams make the playoffs and Champion is three games behind fourth-place Veterans Memorial with four games left on the schedule heading into Friday where they faced district front runner Wagner.

After that, the Chargers are on the road for two games this coming week at Kerrville Tivy and at Veterans Memorial before closing out the regular season at home against Smithson Valley on Feb. 11.

In Tuesday’s game, the Chargers were trailing 31-17 at halftime and were outscored by the Unicorns in the third quarter, 17-15, to make it 48-32.

Champion had a strong finish to the game and almost caught the Unicorns. The Chargers tallied 27 in the final stanza, but NB dropped in 18, enough to record the 7-point win.

Logan Scott led the Chargers with 23 points, Gavin Peck finished with 17 points, Alex Ross scored 8, Kane Lonsdale added 7 and Travis Clark scored 3.

Scott added 4 rebounds and 2 steals to his totals and Baeden Burdick dished out 3 assists.
