Second-round struggles continue for Champion boys

The second-round struggles continued last Friday night for the Boerne Champion boys basketball team.

Champion hosted Pieper and was looking to snap a three-game losing streak but the Warriors defeated the Chargers in Boerne, 61-49.

Champion closed out the first round of 26-5A action at 4-4 after a loss to Smithson Valley. They’ve lost three since then in the second round and have now dropped four in a row.

The Chargers are 4-7 in district and 21-9 overall. Champion is currently sitting in seventh place in the 26-5A standings with five games on the schedule after Friday.

They were at New Braunfels Tuesday and host Wagner Friday. After that, they have Kerrville Tivy, Veterans Memorial and Smithson Valley left and need to pick up a few wins if they are going to finish in the top four.

Wagner (10-1), Alamo Heights ( 8- 3), New Braunfels (8-4) and Pieper (7-5) are currently in the top four spots, with Veterans Memorial (6-6) and Boerne High (5-7) in fifth and sixth, followed by the Chargers.

Champion’s Gavin Peck and Pieper’s Parker Golsch tied for game-high honors with 24 points each.

After Peck’s 24 points powered by five 3-pointers, Logan Scott added 13, Baeden Burdick scored 7, Kane Lonsdale hit a 3-pointer for 3 points and Alex Ross made a couple of free throws for 2 points.
