Lady Chargers slay Dragons in season opener

Lady Chargers slay Dragons in season opener

Boerne Champion faced Southwest at Charger Gym Tuesday to open the 2024 volleyball season.

While the Lady Dragons were a scrappy team and played tough, the Lady Chargers still managed a sweep, 25-17, 26-24, 25-20, to start the year at 1-0.

Champion travels to Abilene to play in a tournament there. For results of that tourney, see the Boerne Star.

Champion took the first game Tuesday but Southwest was leading Game 2 late at 22-20 and a win by the Dragons would have evened it at 1-1 and likely would have changed the tone of the match, but the Chargers rallied and gutted out the 26-24 win.

Azteca Crawford said they pulled together.

“We did it all together, when we were down, we came back up, every person matters and everyone has a role,” she said.

The Dragons had a fast start in Game 3 and were leading 6-2. Again, the Chargers rallied and closed it out for the sweep.

Ella Coleman said they won’t underestimate any opponent this year.

“We have to have an underdog mentality,” she said. “We have to play smart with what we’re doing and I think we’ll have a great season.”

Coleman led the team with 16 kills and 5 digs, while Crawford finished with 32 assists and 5 digs. Brielle Boothe added 7 kills and 8 digs, Cassidy Breuer served up 3 aces and Taylor Fenton came up with 3 blocks.
